Selia Yang was born in Seoul, South Korea, raised in Toronto, Canada, and came to New York City in 1997 to pursue her love for fashion. She began designing and producing high-end evening and cocktail dress under the “Garb New York” label in a 9th Street boutique. She immediately impressed the fashion industry with her keen eye for detail. It didn’t take long for celebrities Marisa Tomei and Tia Ciarrera to snatch up her cocktail dresses.
As the boutique acquired a strong public following, Selia’s couture clients returned with requests for her to design their bridal gowns. Though reluctant initially, Selia noted the lack of selection in this market and determined to apply her concept of simple elegance to the world of bridal fashion. So in 2005, her flagship in Tribeca opened with her Bridal Collection. Today, the Selia Yang luxury brand brings its modern elegance to bridal fashion, captivating stylish, sophisticated women from around the world.
“No wonder her dresses have become so popular with both New York brides to be and women looking for that exquisite and unique dresses that helps them light up a room when they enter.”—Best Shop for Dessing Like a Princess — Selia Yang. The Village Voice, “The Best of NYC”
In 2009, Selia Yang introduced to the bridal market an innovative and artistic collection which received rave reviews from fashion editors, brides, and retailers. Building upon that critical and commercial success, the design house now offers two bridal lines, Couture and Selia Yang Collection. Eight retail accounts were established across the US, Canada and Hong Kong within eight months of launching wholesale operations. Saks Fifth Avenue was the first famous-name retailer to carry the Selia Yang label. THE KNOT voted Selia Yang “Best of Weddings, Designers NYC” in both 2008 and 2009. Her gowns were featured in the Saks Fifth Avenue window display in January 2010 with other leading bridal designers. Selia’s work was also featured in Martha Stewart (Fall/Winter 2009) and Town & Country (Fall/Winter 2009 and Spring/Summer 2010). A Selia Yang wedding gown was the centerpiece of the climactic moment in the 2008 motion picture Made of Honor starring Michelle Monaghan and Patrick Demspsey.
